Tourism is a key driver in poverty reduction through job creation, generation of foreign earnings and provision of livelihoods to a significant proportion of the population in Uganda. Tourism has, in the recent past, doubled with the contribution to the economy estimated at 9 per cent of GDP with up to 23.5 per cent of the foreign exchange earnings. 

The SWITCH Africa Green regional meeting on sustainable tourism was held on 29 and 30 October 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda. The meeting was a platform for discussion on the economic viability of enterprises in the sustainable tourism sector that had improved livelihoods, generated income and created jobs while preserving the environment.

This impact sheet on 'Enhancing Sustainable Tourism Innovation for Community Empowerment in Kenya (SUS-TOUR)' provides a snapshot of results and achievements of the project under the Green Business Development Component of Phase I (2014-2019) of the SWITCH Africa Green Programme. This component supported micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to apply and adopt sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices in their business. operations.

This report presents an analysis of the implementation and results of the SWITCH Africa Green programme in the tourism sector focusing on the participating countries Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa and Uganda. It covers the strategic interventions on sustainable tourism such as sustainable consumption and production patterns in hotels, promoting community based tourism (CBT) practices and promoting inclusive business and eco entrepreneurship in the tourism industry (ecotourism).

This component supported micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to apply and adopt SCP practices in their business operations.
