Burkina Faso has taken a number of environmental protection measures aimed at encouraging the rational use of the country’s natural resources to support its socioeconomic development and meet the needs of future generations. There is high potential for greening existing enterprises in Burkina Faso and ample opportunity to create new green enterprises; political commitment to green business development is evident. Well-defined policies and sufficient financial resources allocated to policy implementation are needed, however, to translate that political will into results. In addition, the country’s financial structure is not designed to support the growth of green businesses, most notably because favourable credit facilities for micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are lacking. Burkina Faso identified integrated waste management, manufacturing and tourism as the priority sectors for SWITCH Africa Green interventions in the country.
The national institution guiding programme implementation in Burkina Faso is the Directorate of Green Economy and Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment, Green Economy and Climate Change.
The SWITCH Africa Green programme is developed and funded by the European Union and implemented by United Nations Environment Programme and European Union Delegations in the participating countries.
