Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN)

The Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) serves as a knowledge platform to equip adaptation practitioners in the region with the information, knowledge, and tools to design, implement, review  and report on climate change adaptation measures, foster access to technologies and finance, and build capacity for integrating climate change adaptation into national development policies, strategies and plans.

Under the broader scope of the Global Adaptation Network (GAN), APAN was developed and launched by the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in 2009 with support from the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan. Over the years, APAN has established close partnerships with key organizations  in the region and has become an important adaptation knowledge mobiliser in Asia and the Pacific Region through its flagship event: theAsia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum (APAN Forum). Since its inception, it has successfully maintained collaborations with key and leading climate change organizations in the region.

APAN is also supporting activities of the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) and Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI) in Asia and the Pacific Region in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), under the overall guidance of GAN. The Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum has also gained credibility as a potent adaptation knowledge-sharing event with the APAN partner organizations taking the lead in the design and delivery of the Forum.

APAN’s mission is to help build climate change resilient and sustainable human systems, ecosystems and economies in countries across the Asia-Pacific region.

To mobilize knowledge and capacities for climate resilience in Asia and the Pacific, APAN has been implementing four areas of work as follows:

  • Knowledge sharing and networking
  • Expansion of global initiatives at the regional level
  • Knowledge dissemination and capacity building
