Rising water pollution globally threatens public health, food security and biodiversity. Addressing inadequate water quality is crucial to ensure water security and protecting ecosystems.
The Global Environment Monitoring System for Freshwater monitors and assesses the quality of Freshwater resources globally. GEMS/Water collects and analyzes water quality data from various sources worldwide, providing valuable information to governments, organizations and researchers. It operates through national and regional networks that collect data on parameters such as pollutants, nutrient levels and other indicators affecting water quality. GEMS/Water is the custodian agency for SDG 6.3.2.
GEMS/Water aims to:
→ enhance global understanding of water quality issues
→ identify trends
→ support informed decision-making related to water resource management
→ contribute to global reports on water quality
→ facilitate capacity building in monitoring and assessment
→ collaborate with other UN agencies and international bodies to address water quality challenges worldwide
Our work on monitoring water quality is carried out through public-private partnerships, often involving partners, collaborating centres and networks.
