Peatlands store 1/3 of global soil carbon yet face threats from drainage and agriculture. We must keep this carbon locked to achieve global climate goals.
Small but mighty – peatlands might cover only 3% of the Earth’s land surface, but by urgently conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing peatlands globally, we can reduce emissions and revive an essential natural carbon sink, halt the loss of some iconic animal and plant species, and protect traditional livelihoods.
The Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI), formed at the UNFCCC COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco in 2016, provides its members with an international platform where science is translated into policy, and then into action.
