Mozambique has made remarkable economic progress over the last two decades, with significant growth in the service, light industry, and agriculture sectors. Increases in foreign direct investment, particularly in natural resource projects, suggest there will be sustained economic growth in the future.

Despite positive economic progress, 55 per cent of the country’s population lives on less than 1 USD per day. Environmental challenges, including deforestation, declining fish stocks, and loss and degradation of wetlands and rivers, are compounded by climate change and high population growth. The government has embraced green economy in its Five Year Government Plan (2015-2019) as a means to mitigate these environmental challenges while ensuring continued economic growth and promoting inclusive sustainable development.
