Electric Mobility

Towards a low-emission transport sector
.

As the first-ever global inter-agency electric mobility programme, the Global Programme to Support Countries with the Shift to Electric Mobility is pursuing the rapid introduction of electric mobility in GEF recipient countries.

UNEP is collaborating with EBRD, UNIDO, DBSA and UNDP to support 40 countries and city projects globally with GEF investments worth $50 million towards:

  1. Raising awareness of the multiple benefits of electric mobility for all relevant stakeholders
  2. De-risking investment in electric vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment
  3. Providing policy packages and supporting the development of adequate and context-specific policies,
  4. Ensuring that the integration of renewable energy sources and the de-carbonization of the power grid is part of the transition to electric mobility.
  5. Promoting sustainable use of batteries and battery materials recycling; and
  6. Integrating gender issues into (electric) mobility and work with policy makers in designing gender-responsive policies and solutions
  7. Promoting private sector engagement and facilitate the creation of markets for the introduction of electric mobility

The GEF programme has also partnered with the EC SOLUTIONSplus project to target the introduction of e-mobility to mitigate greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, reduce energy use and increase socio-economic co-benefits such as lower expenditures on energy import and improved public health in low and middle-income countries world-wide.

The participating countries through this program are expected to significantly reduce their emission of vehicle pollutants through the introduction of electric vehicles and subsequently improve their urban air quality. In addition, there will be increased energy security from the growth of local energy resources and reduced fuel importation. The long-term impact also expected is the creation of a green industry in the electrification of the global vehicle fleet.

The upcoming GEF 8 Climate Change focal area strategy under its Pillar I will continue to invest towards Electric Mobility projects within its objective of scale up zero-emission mobility of people and goods. The Climate Change Mitigation team welcomes national government who wish to receive support to develop national electric mobility projects in the upcoming cycle to get in touch with us.
