The UNEP GEF Climate Change Mitigation Unit is currently supporting over eighty (80) developing countries to prepare their periodic National Communication(NC) and Biennial Update Reports(BUR) to meet their reporting obligations under the UNFCCC. It is also supporting countries transition to Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR) which will replace the Biennial Update Reports by 2024 under the new Enhanced Transparency Framework in the Paris Agreement.
The Mitigation team provides technical support to the national governments to develop funding proposals to access GEF funding and upon receipt, we work closely with the executing ministries to enhance their institutional capabilities to prepare their periodic reports to the UNFCCC.
A Global Support Programme jointly implemented with UNDP has also been providing technical assistance to the non-Annex 1 countries to improve the quality of their periodic National Communication and Biennial Update Reports by strengthening their institutional capacities through technical backstopping, tools and training. Regional expert networks have also been established within the global programme that provide an avenue for information and best practice sharing amongst the participating countries to further enhance their reporting capacities. As the countries transition to Biennial Transparency Reports, Phase II of the support programme will continue under the CBIT II Platform.
GEF 8 funding cycle will continue to invest in countries under its Pillar II towards supporting them meet their relevant Convention obligations and enabling activities.
