Energy Efficiency

Transforming markets to combat climate change

They way we consume energy holds an important key to helping people and planet. By improving the efficiency of our energy consumption, bills can dramatically lower while reducing emissions from energy production and consumption, therefore taking smart climate action.

The GEF Mitigation Unit supports Energy Efficiency projects through working on:

  • Lighting and Appliances: aiming to removing barriers, creating enabling environments and transforming national markets as a channel of combating climate change.

UNEP developed the global En.lighten and United for Efficiency initiatives to provide countries that are transitioning to efficient lighting and appliances with technical support to develop national standards for efficiency as well as raise awareness to support rapid uptake of the technologies at the national levels

  • Buildings hold an impressive potential to reduce energy consumption and the Unit supports countries to develop policies and standards that include building codes, labelling and certification schemes; designing energy efficient buildings to pilot as a demonstration for replication; and retrofitting existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency.

The Unit’s support to countries builds on previous technical experience from UNEP’s District Energy in Cities and Building Efficiency Accelerator, which addressed market and policy gaps and barriers.

By address energy, climate and social challenges such as energy poverty through energy efficiency measures, countries have a unique opportunity to tap into the social benefits of climate action and improve people’s lives and wellbeing.
