The Climate Change Mitigation Unit is implementing over 90 GEF projects globally across 109 countries in the areas of Sustainable Cities, Electric Mobility, Energy Efficiency, Enabling Activities and Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT). The Unit also has a pipeline of projects under development nearing approval worth USD 60 million.
In preparation of the upcoming GEF 8 programming cycle, the Unit will be working closely with national ministries and partners towards supporting countries develop projects that are aligned with their climate strategies to access funding within GEF’s two strategy pillars:
- Pillar I: Promote innovation, technology transfer, and enabling policies for mitigation options with systemic impacts
- Pillar II: Foster enabling conditions to mainstream mitigation concerns into sustainable development strategies
The GEF-8 Cycle will continue to work through the integrated programs which will complement the investments in the focal area pillar strategies I & II. These integrated programs within the Climate Change Mitigation portfolio will focus on Sustainable Cities and Net-Zero Accelerator.
The Climate Change Mitigation Unit is also supporting 17 countries develop readiness programmes with the GCF in the areas of Energy Efficiency, Electric Mobility and Climate Financing. As the GEF and GCF work towards establishing a Long-Term Vision of Complementarity, national ministries developing climate mitigation projects that build on the efforts of either funds will be reviewed favorably in accessing funding.
