The UNEP GEF Mitigation Unit, through its expertise and regional presence in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and the Latin America and the Caribbean regions, fosters global environmental benefits in the fight against climate change.
Together with its UNEP initiatives, the Unit works hand in hand with various governments and diverse partners in developing countries to implement a portfolio of more than USD 400 million worth of GEF grant investments. The Unit leads, together with UNEP technical teams, GEF global programs on areas including sustainable cities, net-zero nature-positive accelerator, electric mobility and climate transparency. Interventions are rooted in inclusivity and gender perspective - humanizing projects is key to consider how they will impact people in each context. These programs provide global thought-leadership, bringing together leading international actors to develop cutting-edge policy guidance for developing countries.
The programs also work with such countries to support them in drawing upon that knowledge as they accelerate national action. The Unit is also implementing more than 100 GEF projects globally across 100 countries in the areas of sustainable cities, electric mobility, energy efficiency, enabling activities and climate transparency.
Additionally, through implementation of these projects, the GEF Mitigation Unit has supported countries in raising more than USD 2 billion in co-financing commitments for increased efforts in promoting low-emission development.
In preparation for the upcoming GEF 9 programming cycle, the Unit will be working closely with national ministries and partners. The objective is to support them to develop projects that are aligned with their climate strategies to access funding aligned with the GEF’s programming directions.
