About the project:
This project is carried out by UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (UNEP-IETC) in collaboration with Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET), among others. The project is funded by the Government of Japan.
The initiative was born out of the emerging global plastic pollution crisis that has been escalating over recent decades. This complex situation is driven by a range of factors, and implementing plastic waste management according to best environmental practices is recognized as one of the most important measures to promote a circular economy. This includes preventing the leakage of plastic waste into the environment and enhancing recycling.
Within this context, the project establishes a series of sustainable plastic waste management activities based on national and city waste management strategies previously developed by UNEP-IETC and CCET.
This project is part of the UNEP Plastics Initiative. To receive updates on this initiative please subscribe to the newsletter.
Objective:
The project analyzes and evaluates the best practices in plastic waste management in Japan and other countries. Based on this evaluation, it will develop action programs, host project meetings, and support new plastic waste recycling projects. The ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable plastic waste management system, essential for implementing a new convention on plastics.
Activities and expected results:
Expected Results
Possible sustainable plastic waste management practices to be required after the entry into force of a new convention would be clarified. These practices will facilitate the establishment of a circular economy at the local level, foster social value creation, and contribute to the INC process, as well as assist Parties in implementing the necessary activities under the new convention.
Activities
- Development of a Global Plastic Waste Management Outlook.
- Creation of technical materials detailing the sources of plastic waste, its end processes, and resource value.
- Establishment of a stakeholders hub and action plan for sustainable plastic waste management.
- Study on the integration of plastic waste in a carbon-neutral society.
- Outreach activities, including raising awareness through social media campaigns and organizing events to commemorate special occasions.
- Follow-up activities related to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution process.
