“With every calamity that we face – from pandemics to weather extremes, to food shortages, to pollution – it only seems to get worse for women and girls,” said United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Inger Andersen, marking year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign. “Let us unite behind activists around the world who are calling for change and supporting survivors of violence.”
The campaign which runs from 25 November to 10 December, highlights that environmental degradation, resource scarcity, the climate crisis and environmental crime all exacerbate gender-based violence.
Women environmental human rights defenders are also increasingly at risk of gender-based violence and discrimination.
