Global transition from fossil fuels to electric mobility

The transport sector is responsible for approximately one-quarter of all energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, as 95 per cent of world’s transport energy still comes from fossil fuels. Projections indicate that this figure is expected to increase to one-third, outpacing the growth rates seen in other sectors. Moreover, the rising demand for resources, energy, and motorized transport, coupled with unplanned and unmanaged urbanization, contributes to biodiversity loss, air pollution, and the climate crisis.

In response to these challenges, UNEP is collaborating with countries and partners to facilitate the global transition from fossil fuels to electric mobility including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Two and Three wheelers and light duty vehicles. This initiative aims to address the environmental impact of the anticipated tripling of the global car fleet by 2050.  By combining resources and efforts, UNEP and its partners work towards achieving cleaner air and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport through the supporting countries adopt fuel efficiency standards, embrace active mobility as well as supporting the shift to cleaner and safer used vehicles.
