Campaign Chemicals & waste
The International Solid Waste Association Young Professionals Group (ISWA YPG) is running a global campaign #WhatHappensToMyWaste to raise awareness about how waste is dealt with around the world and how to prevent waste at source. A survey is being conducted to collect information on waste education initiatives and waste facilities worldwide, of which the data will be used to conduct a gap analysis to provide key insights on waste/resource education globally in the form of a report. 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific will be held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, from 9-12 April 2018. The Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific was launched in 2009 in Tokyo, Japan with the objective of integrating the 3Rs in policy, planning and development. The forum provides a strategic platform for sharing best practices in 3R areas, including new and emerging issues of concern in waste management. Established in 1971 the UNCRD is based on an agreement between the Government of Japan and the United Nations.

From 11 to 15 December 2017, policy makers from Bhutan, Mongolia and Nepal will join the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) team in Bangkok, Thailand, for a five-day training on how to achieve long-term reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants from the waste sector.

The International Environmental Technology Centre organised the Global Dialogue on Technology for Resilient Cities in collaboration with Osaka City and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. 130 people participated from 23 countries, 12 international organisations, academia, private sector, and NGOs. They discussed technology and urban resilience in hazardous waste and chemicals, waste management, pollution prevention, city-city cooperation, financing, education, and social aspects.

A workshop on the “Prioritization of activities within the national and city level waste management improvement strategies and action plans” was successfully organized in Ulaanbaatar on 10 October 2017 by The Asia Foundation Mongolian office. The workshop gathered more than 35 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, the Ulaanbaatar City Mayor’s office, other government and non-governmental organizations, as well as business entities which actively support and work on improving the solid waste management in the country.

According to the three conventions developed under UNEP auspices together they provide an international framework governing the environmentally sound management of hazardous chemicals and ozone depleting substances. Hazardous Chemical and waste including ozone depleting substances (HFCs) are inevitable by-products of consumption and production processes. Sound management of these chemicals and waste is therefore necessary to avoid substantial adverse human, health and environmental effects that are associated with poor management in most of the urban areas in Africa.
