The IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) is pleased to announce a live event as a part of programs at ISAP2018: International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific 2018.
Titled “From Waste Management to Resource Management – Moving from Theory to Practice”, the session will be live-streamed via YouTube platform in order to reach wide audience, and we would like to invite you and your colleagues to join us.

Introduction:
Protecting the environment and ecosystems has been shown to prevent damage and deaths from disasters. Furthermore, protection of natural resources can prevent conflict, as the degradation of land and the misuse of resources often lead to tensions. Investment in ecosystems and in resilience projects, including “Building Back Better”, is a major opportunity for development and climate finance, including for the private sector, as these investments can have a major positive impact.
The International Solid Waste Association Young Professionals Group (ISWA YPG) is running a global campaign #WhatHappensToMyWaste to raise awareness about how waste is dealt with around the world and how to prevent waste at source. A survey is being conducted to collect information on waste education initiatives and waste facilities worldwide, of which the data will be used to conduct a gap analysis to provide key insights on waste/resource education globally in the form of a report. 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific will be held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, from 9-12 April 2018. The Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific was launched in 2009 in Tokyo, Japan with the objective of integrating the 3Rs in policy, planning and development. The forum provides a strategic platform for sharing best practices in 3R areas, including new and emerging issues of concern in waste management. Established in 1971 the UNCRD is based on an agreement between the Government of Japan and the United Nations.
Toward an Urban-Industrial Symbiosis - Actions from Kawasaki: Strengthening Cooperation among Cities in Asia to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) -
From 11 to 15 December 2017, policy makers from Bhutan, Mongolia and Nepal will join the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) team in Bangkok, Thailand, for a five-day training on how to achieve long-term reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants from the waste sector.
G-STIC 2017 focuses on integrated technological solutions that potentially have a large impact on the achievement of the SDGs and climate change goals. The activities in G-STIC 2017 were organized and structured in 12 thematic areas, including 8 thematic clusters and 4 cross-cutting themes addressing aspects that are of global importance to the thematic clusters.
The International Environmental Technology Centre organised the Global Dialogue on Technology for Resilient Cities in collaboration with Osaka City and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. 130 people participated from 23 countries, 12 international organisations, academia, private sector, and NGOs. They discussed technology and urban resilience in hazardous waste and chemicals, waste management, pollution prevention, city-city cooperation, financing, education, and social aspects.
A workshop on the “Prioritization of activities within the national and city level waste management improvement strategies and action plans” was successfully organized in Ulaanbaatar on 10 October 2017 by The Asia Foundation Mongolian office. The workshop gathered more than 35 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, the Ulaanbaatar City Mayor’s office, other government and non-governmental organizations, as well as business entities which actively support and work on improving the solid waste management in the country.

IETC is organising two panel sessions at the 2017 ISWA World Congress titled “UN Environment Waste Management Outlooks: Opportunities and Solutions from the UNEP Regions” and “Plastic Waste and Marine Litter: Minimizing Our Footprint”.

The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP1) will take place from 24 to 29 September 2017 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) of the Maldives and IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET), UN Environment International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) organized a three-day regional workshop in GA Villingili from 18-20 July 2017 to develop regional and island-level waste management strategies and action plans for Zones 6 & 7.

This workshop is part of the development of a project proposal to be submitted to the Green Climate Fund. UN Environment IETC is gathering local stakeholders to identify opportunities for reducing greenhouse gases emissions from the waste sector, targeting Special Economic Zones and Industrial Parks. In doing so, the workshop will assess the environmental, social and economic needs and challenges specific to these concentrated forms of industrial development.

World Environment Day is a the United Nations' flagship day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for environment. In collaboration with Nippon Television, we will be present at Sora Festival with Sorajiro, a mascot whose passion is to care about the earth and find solutions to ecological problems.
We will talk about this year's theme "I'm with Nature", play games, and hold a workshop showcasting brand new TV clips (see below!).

The International Environmental Technology Centre will be holding a side event during the meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, which will take place between the 24th of April and the 6th May 2017.
The central question of this event will be:How can we apply environmentally sound technologies to the current mercury waste management practices?
According to the three conventions developed under UNEP auspices together they provide an international framework governing the environmentally sound management of hazardous chemicals and ozone depleting substances. Hazardous Chemical and waste including ozone depleting substances (HFCs) are inevitable by-products of consumption and production processes. Sound management of these chemicals and waste is therefore necessary to avoid substantial adverse human, health and environmental effects that are associated with poor management in most of the urban areas in Africa.
"Kawasaki International Eco-Tech Fair" aims to deliver excellent environment-related information from "here in Kawasaki" within Japan and throughout the world and provide a venue for business matching between the exhibitors (companies / organizations) and the visitors (domestic / foreign companies).

The development of national and city waste management strategy and action plan, and pilot demonstration are in line with the overall goal to provide support on national and local capacity for waste management. With these, adopting waste management as a national priority presents an opportunity to address the challenges on political and social visibility.
